Central High School 100th Anniversary Event

To keep you informed, the following is an email from Paul Gentry, one of the organizers of the Central High School 100th Anniversary event:

My name is Paul Gentry (class of 1977).  I am on the board of the recently formed Memphis Central Alumni Association.  We are currently involved in planning events to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Central.  Please see details at  http://www.memphiscentralalumni.org  about anniversary events as well as membership in Memphis Central Alumni.  The main events center around the homecoming football game on September 24 at new Crump stadium.  The events will begin with a memorabilia display in the Memphis Room at the main public library throughout the month of September. Items to be displayed are being currently sought.  Other events are planned for the weekend surrounding the homecoming game.  Please post information about these events and the Alumni Association on your website. We would love to have Warriors from as many different classes as possible represented.

Thanks!!

CONGRATULATIONS, Coach Mac!

On May 10, the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame presented the Distinguished American Award to Lloyd C. McDougal, Jr.  The award is not limited to a former college player or coach, must be an outstanding person who has maintained a lifetime of interest in the game and who, over a long period of time, has exhibited enviable leadership qualities and made a significant contribution to the betterment of amateur football in the United States.

Coach Mac served in the Memphis City Schools for forty years as coach at Central High School and Treadwell High School along with teaching and administrative duties. He was also the Assistant Principal of Central High School at the time of his retirement.

Lloyd McDougal graduated from Mississippi State University where he received an athletic scholarship. He is in the MSU Sports Hall of Fame there and is the last of the Four Sport Lettermen, having lettered in football, basketball, baseball and track.

SARA ELIZABETH “BETTY ” TURNAGE RAFANTI

  Very sorry to report to you of the death of our classmate, Sarah Elizabeth “Betty” Turnage Raffanti. I’m told that Betty (as she was known to us back in 1956) suffered with cancer for nine years before passing away on April 15, 2010. She is survived by her husband of many years, Jimmy; daughters Denise Santucci and Vicki Clark; brothers Mark and Bill Turnage; her son Christopher Raffanti;
and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Betty was buried in Memorial Park Cemetery in Memphis.

In a recent email from your reporter....

Dear Gail,
So happy that we found you and that you are no longer “lost”! Attached are a couple of Central High 1956 lists that you will probably enjoy reviewing. Be sure that your personal information is correct. (I did not hear you say whether your spouse is still living – if you want to add his name.) As I mentioned, you will be getting email notices of any Central ‘56 happenings.

Please check our website – you will love going through some great memories.

Take care and send any interesting information you have or come across about other classmates.

Yippee! Gail Whitfield Nethery, you are found!

Happy Memorial day to each of you. Please take time out this weekend to remember all of those who have defended our liberty.

A Change in Reporting Classmate Deaths

The growing number of losses among classmates has often lent a sad note to these newsletters. That's why we changed the newsletter (home page) to concentrate more on the living side of our class. We'll still report the sadder side to you in other pages where the bad news is shown. It was our thinking that while we all want to know what is going on with our classmates, we don't want to dwell on the morbid news either. It's much more enjoyable to hear good news about everyone.

On the left side of this page, you'll note a sidebar announcing recent classmate deaths with links to the In Memoriam page with links to a new page which reports the details for the calendar year. We hope that you concur.

P. S. Remember to keep checking our website: www.memphiscentralhigh56.com from time to time

If you have a contribution to share with the class,
please direct it to Billy Schaefer
